You've probably seen and heard about CoolSculpting® all over the media- but what does it mean, and what can it do for you?
Years ago, scientists at Harvard University observed that some children who ate popsicles got dimples in their cheeks. The scientists—Dieter Manstein, MD and R. Rox Anderson, MD—realized that the popsicles were freezing and eliminating small pockets of fat cells.
The idea that cold can target fat cells—without damaging the skin or surrounding tissue—was the insight behind cryolipolysis, the proven science on which the CoolSculpting procedure is based.
The CoolSculpting® procedure uses a patented cooling applicator cup, that when placed over a pocket of fat, will send fat cells into "cell death," to then be expelled by the body. The best part about this- is that it's permanent! Your existing fat cells can just expand and contract but you can rest assured that the area treated will still stay smaller relative to other areas that are not treated.
Traditional liposuction is a surgical procedure that requires patients to undergo anesthesia and requires you to spend weeks in recovery. There are many more risks and potential complications that come from any surgical procedure. While the results are more instant, and you can remove more fat with a single procedure, you can enjoy walking out of the door to resume normal activities after a CoolSculpting® treatment.
Additionally, diet and exercise can help eliminate body fat overall, but there are always those stubborn pockets of fat that seem to resist all efforts. Although CoolSculpting® isn't meant to replace regular diet and exercise, it can definitely supplement it to get you the body you're working hard to achieve!
The tissue is drawn into the applicator cup with a gentle vacuum and the cooling plates then deliver the controlled cooling to send fat cells into apoptosis (cell death). Each pocket of fat is treated for 35-45 minutes (depending on applicator size) at -11°C. You may feel an intense cold initially, but it subsides within the first few minutes. The entire procedure is very comfortable, with the ability to watch Netflix®, Hulu® or movies. After a cycle is finished, your certified technician with gently massage the area for 2 minutes and you may feel some tingling as sensation to the area returns. These fat cells are then expelled through your body's natural processes over the next 3-4 months. Patients may have some bruising, redness or swelling present post treatment, but potential side effects of CoolSculpting® are very minimal and rare.
No, CoolSculpting® is not intended as a substitute for weight loss programs. Any area that receives treatment will have a permanent reduction in the number of fat cells, but as we've heard many time, fat weighs less than muscle. With a reduction in fat to any given area, you may see a visible reduction in size without actual decrease in the number on a scale. Treated areas will not regain the same amount of "bulk" with any weight gain, but remaining fat cells can enlarge, therefore giving the appearance of a minimal efficacy.
The price for CoolSculpting® varies depending on the areas of concern, the number of treatments needed and your ultimate goals. Some patients may opt for a full Treatment-to-Transformation™ or they may opt to go with a targed transformation. Additionally, some patients may need a second or third round of treatments to acheive the results they want. We offer in-house financing and other medical financing options that offer up to 18 months interest-free like CareCredit®. Depending on the number of cycles purchased, we offer package discounts.
